A great mascara is the difference between a good face of makeup and just a face of makeup – and trust me, there’s a big difference between the two.
Like most of you, I have tried and tested dozens of mascaras in my time, desperately trying to find my true lash soulmate. I have naturally long lashes (thank you Jesus) so naturally, I would like to accentuate them with a good covering, lash pulling mascara.
I don’t know about you guys but I literally go blind with fury when I purchase mascara and then on the first application it feels like I’m using an empty tube. The type of mascara that barely touches your lashes. The type of mascara that is too shy to make an appearance at the party. Like for goodness sake I have just spent £15 on you WITHOUT refund may I add, and you want to act like a clear tube of sh*t sent free in a weekly copy of Mizz magazine?
You can see where I’m going with this… this review is not on the type of mascara that is light, barely there and natural – so if that is what you’re looking for you may as well leave now (but please don’t).
Clinique has always been good to me. Whether it’s their ‘Even Better’ foundation or their ‘cheek pop’ the products always seem to do the trick, and most importantly, worth the money.
So, let’s today focus on mascara: Clinique High Impact Extreme Volume Mascara in 01.
At £20 a tube it is rather expensive but falls into the same bracket as other high end brands such as MAC, Estée Lauder and Bobby Brown.
The price is justified when you realise how much product transfers onto your lashes in one application. By one application I mean how many times you dip the wand into the tube. We’ve all been there when one eye takes about 20 minutes because we’re in and out of the tube trying to clutch as much product as possible.
The wand itself has plastic bristles as opposed to softer brushes which I find do not collect a lot of product thus presenting the issue mentioned above. With this wand you are easily able to coat every lash there ever could be on your eyes in one sleek movement, leaving them dramatic yet defined. The wand is quite large compared to most high street mascaras but I feel this makes it extremely effective and efficient.
The wand also does a great job of attaching to your lashes and pulling them up (or down depending on upper or lower lashes) to lengthen and curl them. As I mentioned at the start I have naturally long lashes and after doing my mascara I feel like I have several pairs of fakes on they are that outstanding (that could be taken for me being big headed and…yes, you’re right).
Some of you may be alarmed at me using words such as fake, dramatic, thick etc but I do not mean my lashes look bulky or spider like, just very bold and dazzling.
Another great thing about this mascara is its longevity. Once it’s on you do not need to worry about it again for the rest of the day. It will not flake off or fade, dry out or melt on your skin. It will literally stay in place the same as it did at the time of applying. EVEN better is when you take it off, it simply washes away with no stubborn marks or missing lashes (had that before, which was fun). I usually get into the shower before bedtime and it rinses off under the water perfectly, followed by my face wash and other skincare routines.
It is a very wet formula which may not be everyone’s cup of tea but again this just emphasizes its greatness. It’s wet enough to coat lashes effectively but dries quickly enough so if you sneeze you haven’t got mascara cheeks. Win win.
I’ve honestly never loved a mascara as much as this and however many times I buy replacement ones due to finances or being in a rush, they’ve never, ever compared. If you’re looking for ultra defined, lengthened but dramatic eyes then this is 100% for you. It is also a perfect finishing touch for night time makeup when you have smokey eyes or eyeliner going on.
Cost: 6/10
Longevity on eyes: 9/10
Removal: 8/10
Tube life: 6/10 (can start to dry up in around 5 weeks)
